Start from the ordered material specification<\/h2>\n

Custom worm shafts are often made from steels that can be machined and, when required, hardened or case treated. Stainless grades can be useful where corrosion exposure matters. The correct grade is an application and drawing decision, not a generic \u201cbest material.\u201d<\/p>\n

When a customer drawing controls the grade, treatment, hardness or case depth, those values are treated as order requirements. If the design is open, send the operating duty and mating wheel so material options can be reviewed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Material choice<\/p>\n

Stainless does not remove the need to check wear and strength<\/h2>\n

A stainless grade may improve corrosion resistance, but it still has to satisfy the tooth-surface, shaft-strength, machinability and treatment requirements of the drive. When the mating wheel is soft or the application is lightly loaded, the trade-off can differ from a heavy industrial reducer.<\/p>\n

Quote the actual corrosion condition and mating material instead of specifying \u201cstainless\u201d as the only design input.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
