Single-Start vs Multi-Start Worm Shafts

For a given wheel tooth count, changing the worm starts changes the ratio. It also changes lead and typically the lead angle. Those changes affect sliding conditions and drive behavior, so the existing wheel or complete new design has to be considered.

Replacement work
On an existing reducer, the start count is normally already fixed. Count the thread starts carefully, confirm the ratio and wheel tooth count, and do not “upgrade” from one start to several without redesigning the mesh.

State the starts, hand, module/pitch, wheel tooth count and ratio together. If one item is unknown, send the mating wheel or complete assembly reference.

Can I order samples first?
For a single-start and multi-start worm shafts project, 1–5 samples can be considered where the manufacturing route is suitable. A very small 1–2 piece order is also possible, normally at a higher unit cost.

Do not change start count during replacement sourcing
On a fixed machine, start count is tied to the mating wheel and ratio. A multi-start shaft that looks similar can produce a completely different motion relationship, so count the starts and cross-check the wheel tooth count before releasing a replacement drawing.
Before releasing a replacement RFQ, use these checks to prove the start count against the mating wheel and ratio. They are more reliable than selecting from a photograph of the thread-like form alone.
