On an existing reducer, the start count is normally already fixed. Count the thread starts carefully, confirm the ratio and wheel tooth count, and do not “upgrade” from one start to several without redesigning the mesh.

Do not change start count during replacement sourcing
On a fixed machine, start count is tied to the mating wheel and ratio. A multi-start shaft that looks similar can produce a completely different motion relationship, so count the starts and cross-check the wheel tooth count before releasing a replacement drawing.
Before releasing a replacement RFQ, use these checks to prove the start count against the mating wheel and ratio. They are more reliable than selecting from a photograph of the thread-like form alone.
